Filming with drones in the Canary Islands

At BeeDron Record we always comply with the regulations of AESA (Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea). It all depends on the STS-ES scenario in which the drone is flying, but the maximum distance a drone can fly in the Canary Islands and Spain is between 100m and 2km.

The State Aviation Safety Agency does not allow drones to be flown above 120 meters.

But don’t worry, it’s completely enough for aerial works for real estate, architecture and construction. What’s more, the best shots are made in low-level flight.

First of all, you ensure that the work will be carried out in full legality and in compliance with current regulations. You also make sure to outsource the management of the permits to professionals who have experience in such management, which in the Canary Islands is particularly cumbersome.

Last but not least, make sure to hire an experienced professional for exquisite aerial work.

The short answer to whether you can fly a drone near the airport is, yes. This type of area is called Controlled Airspaces and the problem is that many drone pilots are not certified or do not have the documentation to perform this type of flight.

On the other hand, the concept of “close” must also be explained, since the controlled airspace means a radius of 8 km around the airport. In the Canary Islands it is in many cases the largest part of the island (not counting Heliports). Therefore, it is of utmost importance to hire a drone operator who is able to perform the work in CTR or FIZ (Controlled Airspaces) areas.

Having documents in order does not mean being able to fly freely and without planning.

It can only be operated in airspace permitted by law and by carrying out appropriate procedures to comply with the regulations. In these cases, it is common to apply for permits to fly in protected areas, apply for permits from the Ministry of the Interior or process documentation to fly in CTR controlled airspace, among others. But don’t worry, we have experience doing this kind of work.

First of all, it is important to note that before hiring a drone company you must check that it is enabled by AESA. The State Aviation Safety Agency is the only body that can give this authorisation. Therefore, being a drone pilot does not mean being an operator.

Secondly, it is compulsory to have third party liability insurance, specific to drone operations.

Thirdly, the pilot must have the qualification appropriate to the job and the scenario in which the RPA will operate.

Drones used by the company must be properly identified with their fire-retardant badge. The plate must be in a visible area of the drone and must contain the contact details and details of the aircraft.

Finally, the question must be asked in which scenarios this drone operator is authorised to fly. In our case we can fly in all kinds of scenarios.
